“I prayed to God to have this baby. But I wanted to give birth quickly, because it was so painful.”
When Christabel Enbe, from Ontario, Canada, found out she was pregnant, she was overjoyed. Christabel, 30, had been praying to God for years to have a baby. But her joy soon turned to sadness.
Within weeks of becoming pregnant, her excitement turned to anxiety over her health. Christabel began to experience severe nausea and vomiting. Even the smell of food made her want to vomit. From then on, she was afraid to even drink water for fear of vomiting.
Her symptoms were more than just the morning sickness that many pregnant women experience. Morning sickness is common in pregnant women, caused by the release of hormones like human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen, between six and 14 weeks of pregnancy. Christabel’s condition was much worse.
Doctors later diagnosed Christabel with a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes severe nausea and vomiting almost every day. She will continue to experience this for the rest of her 39 weeks of pregnancy, which can lead to dehydration and malnutrition.
