Amo camp on Thai-Burma border, held by military for nearly 30 years, seized – KNU

The Karen National Union (KNU) said that the Karen Revolutionary Joint Forces (KRU) may seize the Amo Border (aka Point 2655) military council camp in Dawei Township, on the Thai-Myanmar border, on June 10.

The FFD drone team involved in the operation to seize the camp said that it seized the camp, located on the other side of Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, at 10 am today.

The camp was recaptured 28 years after the Burmese army invaded in 1997, forcing KNU troops to retreat, according to a KNU Myeik-Thaw District official.

The Amo military camp has been under attack since June 8 by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade (4), the Karen National Defense Force (KNDO) and the KNU Revolutionary Joint Forces.

The KRU camp has an estimated strength of around 40 people, and two bodies and some weapons were seized when the camp was captured.

“The rest fled to Thailand. The Thai-Burma border is separated by mountains, so they fled up the Thai side,” said a KNU official in Myeik-Dawei district.

The Amo camp is reportedly about twenty miles from Htei Khe camp, which was captured by the KNLA and allied rebel groups last May.
